July 16 Lost and foundMoving is really confusing. I don't know the area very well so I'm forced to stick with major roads. When I venture off the main roads I become dependent on the maps at the front of my phone book (yeah, I know it's weird).
We've been exploring the classic videogame shops thouh so that's been good. We've added 10 new games to the NES collection and I've discovered that the collection has practically outgrown a 5 shelf bookcase. We're still filling in the common areas of our collection so thankfully the games I'm buying are all under the $2 mark. I did pick up another 4 player game though (woohoo Championship Bowling!). Anyone up for a retro gaming party? No fancy cd based systems allowed July 10 It's been a long time kids... a long time.So my entire life has changed since I last posted anything. I am now 3,000 miles away from Georgia, I am totally jobless and more than a little nervous. The good news is that I have some sort of orientation for game testing at Nintendo on Thursday. It's not really what I want to do but at least it isn't retail. I just need someone to hire me so that I can prove my post-degree worth.
In other news, E3 is today. It's sad to say, but this new format has taken away some of the joy and anticipation from the event. I'm not nearly as excited as I have been in the past. Oh ESA, what have you done? May 08 The NES gods love meMy husband and I were doing our weekly pawn shop checks (although we've pretty much exhausted that avenue. The ones that are left just turn all their old games over to flea market dealers :( ) and we stumbled upon this junky place on the crappy side of town named "Miller's Pawn". He had a decent bit of gaming stuff and about 30 or so NES games. I picked out 6 that I liked and told Jase that I'd be willing to pay $15-$18 for them. He went to the counter and offered the guy $15. The store owner actually said "Don't worry about that... how about you just give me $6 for them" (umm... Wha? The guy turned down money we were prepared to pay?)
The store owner then told us about something "special" he had in the back. Now, I rarely agree with pawn shop owners that they ever have something special. It's usually their way of ripping you off. Anyway, the guy went into the back and came out to the front with a giant NES Deluxe Set. Oh man that thing was pretty... The box looked almost new and the components were beautiful. ROB the Robot had some dust on him but he looked like he'd work. The guy said he wouldn't take less than $140 for it because "these things are going on ebay for $200". We left and ended up coming back for it but Jason talked him into throwing in the 25 NES games that he had left as part of that $140 price tag.
We used the doubles of the games he'd traded us at the flea market on Saturday and ended up getting some pretty rare NES games for a cheap price thanks to the trades. We picked up: Baseball Stars, Baseball Stars II, Battleship (w/ instructions), Star Wars (w/ instructions), Sesame Street 123, Sesame Street Hide and Speak and a few others for $25. All I had to do was trade the guy 4 NES games (One was Jaws, one was the Nintendo triple pack).
Awesome... I love collecting NES games. May 02 The one where I tell you about my awesome findI went to the flea market on Saturday (I think it has finally moved into the "weekly ritual" stage) and had a much better day than I have in the past. Jase and I were doing our normal "let's walk the aisles and pray" when we stopped by some dirty guy's booth since I saw a few electronics laying around (ie DVD players, old stereos etc). I looked down on the table and saw a Turbografx 16 AND an Atari Jaguar. The Jag was missing its RF unit and the T16 didn't have any of its cords. Each system did have a controller though and the T16 had the packin game Keith Courage. I asked the guy how much he wanted for both and he said $20. Now normally I'd balk at paying that price for anything but the cheapest T16 I've seen in a store is $60 and the Jag's normal price is around $40. I figured if they didn't work I'd just eat the loss.
I've managed to borrow a T16 AC adapter and I tested the system last night... it works! Hallelujah! The Jag doesn't but I'm going to try and see if I can figure out what is wrong with it. I really want that system to be operational.
Oh, and I picked up some more games.

April 17 Ryan "Stack" ClarkI received word last night that a friend of mine from high school had been the first victim in the Virginia Tech Massacre. Ryan Clark and I both graduated from Lakeside High School in Evans, Georgia in May 2002. I haven't spoken to Ryan in ages but I often thought about him. I kept meaning to send him a friend request on facebook but I never seemed to get around to it. Yesterday, when I heard the news about VTech, I finally got around to it. I didn't know Ryan had been killed, only that there had been shootings on campus and that a few people had died. I finally sent that friend request off with a message attached. "Hey Ryan, I know we haven't talked in ages but I heard about the stuff going on at Tech. Send me a message and let me know you're ok whenever you get the chance ok? I miss you!"
I didn't know that he'd already died. I didn't know that he would never get that friend request. I didn't know that all of the times I meant to check in on him and then forgot to do so were chances that I would never get again. I'll miss you Ryan. I'm sorry for not checking up on you more and for not letting you know how often I thought of you. I'll never forget your big smile and your laugh. I'm sorry kid... I'll miss you.
February 07 Oh man... I'm still angry about this.I wrote this a few weeks ago but I'm still pretty angry about it. I figured what would be better for my triumphant return than a rant?
You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone. I hate to say it, but this cliché definitely hits close to my life right now. Last week Gamestop went public with the announcement that it had bought out Rhino videogames. Rhino, a chain of approximately 77 stores, had its headquarters in Florida and operated primarily within the southern states. Odds are, this news probably didn’t affect you at all. In fact, many probably don’t even realize that such an event happened. It might not seem like a big deal to some but to collectors as well as the less than affluent, this news is another nail in the coffin of choice. In my area there are seven game stores. Five of these stores are either Gamestops or Electronics Boutiques, one was a Rhino, and the other a Play’n’Trade. Thanks to this buyout those numbers have changed and I now have six stores in my area offering the exact same thing at the exact same price. Before the merger of Gamestop and EB I used to spend the entire day wandering from store to store and perusing the merchandise. I loved being able to compare prices and products and at the end of the day I generally went home happy and laden with bags from my various stops. Now, my trip will consist of a single 10 minute drive to the only store in my area that offers me a choice as to what systems I want to purchase for. I tend to spend money generously on games and gaming merchandise and I purchase products ranging from the Atari 2600 to the Xbox360. Rhino and Play’n’Trade were the only havens I had for products that were released prior to 2000 and thanks to corporate greed even that has been taken away from me. I understand that I am a minority consumer but I would imagine that other customers enjoy choices as much as I do. Gamestop has now taken away one of the only stores I could enter and not get hassled about whether I brought my trade-ins, wanted to reserve something, or purchase a discount card. Part of the joy of game shopping is taking the time to browse through the stacks of games and dredge up childhood memories that relate to each cart or disc. Now, even after I’ve made it through the gauntlet of questions that every customer must endure before entering the store, I still won’t get any peace because I’ll have to listen to the automaton behind the counter giving the same spiel to the next person who enters. Companies such as Gamestop are turning the individuality of the gaming subculture into a faceless corporate front. Every store has the same layout, the same marketing, the same phone greeting, and the same thing to say. So take this corporate buyout as a lesson and enjoy the choices that you possess right now and Keep the local community strong by supporting the little guy. August 09 What's NewSo, lots of cool stuff has been going on lately (some not so cool stuff but I'll keep that brief).
Cool Stuff #1
We got a new tv. It's a 30" Samsung Widescreen HDTV. So far we love it but unfortunately we picked the bum tv of the group and have to replace it (it's been less than a week) because of some discoloration in the upper left corner. We're sad but we get to do a switch on it without any trouble so it's not a huge deal. Stinks that we have to cart it back to the store but the tv itself is worth it and it's gotten fairly solid reviews so I'm sure it's just a bad set. It's my first HDTV (and the largest one I've ever purchased) so it's new experiences all around.
Cool Stuff #2
My mom and I took my autistic nephew (who is almost 8 years old) roller skating last Saturday and it was an all around great experience. Nik, my nephew, really seemed to enjoy himself. It was so much work keeping him occupied though. He's never been before so he was doing the "little kid who doesn't understand that you don't have to step to move" thing. Once he got a little more used to how the whole "skate" thing worked he wanted to go against the flow of everyone and couldn't understand why we weren't allowed to do that. The poor kid got so upset but he eventually understood and started to follow the rules a little better. The best part of the whole day though was our trip to the arcade. The machines themselves were sad, pathetic games (my problem is not really with the games itself but the lack of care that had been taken with them... I don't expect them to be in great shape but I do expect them to WORK). But Nik said the greatest thing ever to me there, "Christina, can I have some money?". Now you have to understand a bit about my nephew.... he doesn't speak very well yet. His speaking is very stilted and his pausing and vocal inflection is very odd. It's not hard at all to believe that there is something different about him if you hear him speak. I also say if because a lot of times he doesn't really speak intelligible sentences. He's got an amazing memory (as in, he can watch a movie once and immediately know the dialogue and the actions and be able to re-enact it in his surroundings and his mind) and a lot of time he speaks only in movies. So anyway, him putting together a sentence in and of itself is very exciting. The second thing that is exciting about that sentence is the fact that he understands the whole concept of money. That statement tells me that he understands that you need money to make things work. He eventually got frustrated with the whole day though and hit his head again... I hate seeing him do that. We went and got some Dippin' Dots though and he calmed down after that.
Cool Stuff #3
We just got Dead Rising. If this post sounds a little disjointed it's because I'm watching my husband play it right now and I keep getting distracted by it. Impressions to follow. Oh, and I almost beat Gun today. Fun game, very short, but worth a rental.
I've got more stuff to add in but I'm feeling far too hungry to write it all up now. July 26 Tony Hawk is the coolest man alive! My 9 year old nephew Logan is obsessed with Tony Hawk. That man is his hero and he follows everything he can that he does. A few months ago he found out that Tony Hawk is touring the country and taking his Boom Boom Huck Jam tour to about ten Six Flags parks nationwide. Luckily for us, we live about 3 hours away from one of the parks he was set to visit. Logan knew that his Uncle Jason and I were both pretty big Tony Hawk fans ourselves so he begged us to take him. We were quite happy to comply so we started getting the day set up and ready to go. Once my father in law got wind of the plans though he wanted to turn it into a full blown family outing (which turned out to be tons of fun!).
So on July 17th, 2006 we made the trek to Six Flags Over Georgia. It had to have been in the upper 90s and we were dying from the heat. Logan was so excited about seeing Tony Hawk though and no matter how hot it was, we knew we were in it for the long haul. Since it was at Six Flags, we all rode a few rides before the 3 pm show (BTW, Goliath is a great great coaster. The first drop is 160 feet and it is a rush!). We decided to start waiting in line at 1:15 and it kept getting hotter...and hotter...and hotter. The show itself was totally worth it though because we had a great standing area. Unfortunately because of the crowd Logan had to sit piggyback on my back (which oh man made it even hotter) but it was worth it to see how excited he was to see Tony.
Jason and I had bought Logan a Tony Hawk shirt for his birthday and since I liked it so much I picked up one for myself. Evan (the younger nephew) didn't want to be left out, so he got a shirt too. Since Logan wanted to be "shirt twins" again we all ended up wearing our shirts to Tony Hawk day. No one could be confused about why we were there! Despite the heat and the drive, it ended up being one of the greatest days in recent memory. According to Logan, "This was the best day of my life! Nothing will EVER be as good as today!". I think it was a success July 14 Birthdays and a Great FamilyMy mother in law took me out to dinner tonight for my birthday (which is next Sunday! hooray!) and I know that no one here knows her or probably even cares but I just have to mention how amazingly great she is as a mother in law. I know everyone always complains about their mothers in law but mine is top of the line. She gave me "The Adventures of Pete and Pete: Season 2" and "Golden Girls: Season 2" and $100! The gifts themselves are awesome but more than that is the feeling of belonging that comes from this family. She doesn't treat me like a daughter in law, more like a daughter. It's wonderful and my grandmother in law is the same way. She gave me a very sweet card and some cash to go along with it. She's a real sweetheart and I feel blessed to have her in my family. My husband showered me with gifts also. (He knows me so well...) He gave me all my gifts early (I am a horrible horrible waiter when it comes to birthdays). I got the new Billy Talent (Can't wait to listen to that!), Psychonauts (I finally own one of the greatest games that hit the last console generation that no one ever paid attention to), The Chipmunk Adventure (Does anyone even remember this?) and Scrubs Season 3. Now Scrubs is as much for him as it is for me but that doesn't take away from the fact that I have a huge amount of tv on dvd to watch. I am so so excited. In other news, I finished Prey yesterday and I gotta say, I loved it. The game is spot on fun and though I still wouldn't consider it amazing I totally rate it as great. The multiplayer is in desperate need of a patch. I can't wait til I can play a game with the chiX on it though, love it love it love it ladies! July 12 Prey and GamerchiXSo I couldn't help it, I picked up Prey yesterday (although I'd actually preordered it so I suppose I was planning on picking it up whether I had the cash or not). I think some women are shoe/purse addicts whereas I am a compulsive game shopper. Back to Prey though, so far I'm really enjoying it. I've not even touched the multiplayer and though I've heard that it is lagtastic I'll reserve that judgement for myself. The single player though is great. I love the wall-walking/gravity switching innovations that it brings to the table. It's simultaneously great and annoying as mess to solve some of these puzzles. I'm still not really used to checking all four walls, the ceiling AND the floor while looking for the right switch to hit. I just started chapter 10 (out of 22) and I've been playing for like 3 hours so I suppose that puts the game at around 6 hours. That's fine with me as long as it's a good 6 hours. I require more from most games but FPSs get a free pass on length usually. I actually played Video Poker for a little while and even unlocked that achievement! The achievement was to win $250 at poker and somehow I did that without having any idea how to play poker. That was either sheer luck or mad skillz... I prefer to think it was my natural talent shining through ;) I've been spending a ton of time in the gamerchiX forums lately too. I usually end up in there when Jase is stealing the tv for some game time so I guess that means he's been playing a lot lately. All the ladies I've met so far have been really sweet though and I'm really glad to have met them. I've actually been mentioning gamerchiX at work and today I told one girl about it and she got really excited. She's only got an original xbox but she loved the idea of actually being able to play with women without having to worry about sexist comments. It really does make you think about how great a group like this is when a women responds to it with such excitement just because she will be able to play with other females and not have to worry about comments. I'm heading out though, time to kick Jason off the 360 (someone please explain to me why he is obsessed with getting all the achievements in Frogger when he's got Prey ( a game he was much more excited for) waiting for him. July 08 Been too long kids...So it's been forever since I last updated this thing but in my defense I've been a very busy girl. I suppose the biggest news regarding me is my new job. I used to work at Gamestop (which is actually where I met my husband... aww, nerd love) but quit because of a mixture of hours, pay etc. I've still stayed good friends with pretty much everyone there (the current store manager as well as the previous manager actually came to my wedding in December) and I heard that they were in the market for a third key manager. I went in to put my name in the pot because my current job wasn't paying so well. Got a call last week (at the end of one of an already awesome day) to come in and talk to the manager. CW (manager) actually took me in the back and told me that he decided he'd rather move me up into the assistant manager position which equals full time, double the pay I was making before, and benefits. I can't say I took too long to decide on that one so I started on the 4th of July. So far it seems like nothing has changed. The things that were annoying before are still annoying and the things that were fun before are still fun. I gotta say I love getting access to more games as well as a discount. Three cheers for cheapness and variety! In other news, I've spent the last 5 hours doing school work that I've put off from the entire last month. It's all due on Monday and being the excellent student that I am I haven't really touched it until today. However, I'm pleased to report that as of this time I've completed 6 tests and 4 quizzes for that class today which finishes me off and leaves me preparing for the exam on Tuesday. God help me I've only got 25 hours left to get my degree and I've got no idea at all how I've made it this far with habits this poor. I'm heading off though to get me some good times gaming in for the rest of the night. The idiot in me is wanting to try and perfect Burnout World tour again on my new tag...why oh why do I do things like this to myself? June 15 Stay AliveStay Alive finally hit the cheap theatres around here and since I've been itching to go see it (but not for $8!) I HAD to go catch it last night. All I have to say is...wow. This movie seemed like the kid who follows you around while dropping names so that you think he is cool. It was name after name after name. Fatal Frame, Silent Hill 4, Game Informer, Alienware, Dreamcast... The list just keeps going on. Gamers were portrayed in stereotypes: you had the goth chick, the nerd who is always quoting studies, the serious gamer who is insensitive as well as dirty, oh, and one normal enough guy. The plot made little to no sense but we'll forgive that as it's a horror movie. I've yet to see a horror movie script win an Oscar so we'll just accept the genre standard that it is what it is and nothing more. What REALLY got me was the product placement. The evil witch was vanquished with the help of an Alienware laptop (with the logo right in your face just in case you missed the fact that it was Alienware) and speaking of which, how do gamers who run a greasy dumpy internet cafe/coffee shop afford a nice sports car and 2 Alienware laptops? The end of the movie showed a giant rack of Game Informer Magazines, coupled with a PS2 kiosk. Despite all of these flaws, I actually sort of liked it. It wasn't a good movie by any means but it was horrible enough to be entertaining. I'd play the game if given a chance, but I doubt I'd spend much time with it although I'm not sure if it was a third or first person game (because apparently it was both!). Overall I'd rate the movie rentable... not nearly as bad as Alone in the Dark but certainly not poised to take its place on the shelf with horror movie classics. June 12 Burnout Revenge has stolen my life awayBurnout Revenge has completely consumed me for the last week or so. I've been coming home from work and popping it in and playing for hours. I finally got Jason in on it and he actually helped me on some Burning Laps that I couldn't get. I'm happy to say though that short of getting all Signature Takedowns we have completed the single player portion! Wahay! Now I just need to jump online and start competing in some crash, road rage, and race events. Xbox Live Burnout here I come! Although we do have Perfect Dark Zero checked out right now too... perhaps I should try that game again. I didn't like it the first time I tried it but maybe it's time for another go. So if anyone sees me on Burnout or PDZ send me a message and we'll play. June 07 Lack of Content and my Open WalletSo lately I've discovered just how brilliant Microsoft is. The Xbox Live Arcade is the greatest idea to hit consoles in a long time. I truly think it is getting overlooked because back up people, the greatest innovation in recent times is not camera control or motion sensing but instead the ability to download small games for online play straight to your console. I say that because every forum I read through, every post I see surrounding the arcade all seem to say one thing... give me more. I know people who are stockpiling Microsoft points for the onslaught of arcade games they are hoping for, people who spend more time on Uno than playing games they paid $60 for, people who buy every arcade game that hits the market whether it is for achievements or the sheer pick up and play aspect of them. The gaming population is screaming for more content and waiting....and waiting. It's been almost a full month since MS threw Uno on the market and during that time it has topped the charts both in most downloaded as well as most played. Think about that.... a game that couldn't have taken that long to develop as well as a low development cost is pulling in more users than many of the "big ticket" games. People are waiting for Street Fighter II Hyper, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Paperboy, Galaga, and Pacman. Now ask all those impatient gamers if they own any incarnation of these highly anticipated games. Most will tell you yes, some will tell you that they own more than one copy of any or all of these games. The big difference for the arcade? Online playability. I understand some of the issues which arise from porting from one (vastly) different platform to another... but this is a new virtually untapped market that developers need to sit up and pay more attention to. Gamers are lining up to pay to play games they already own. What more could a developer want? May 17 Wow.... I really snapped on that oneThis is a post from my old blog but since it was content appropriate I figure it deserves to be resurrected. Now on to the important stuff... We bought an Xbox360 3 weeks ago today. It was an irresponsible buy but we did it anyway. We don't really have the money for $400 systems but hey... you're only young once right? Right? Anyone? My first game for the system was Elder Scrolls: Oblivion and holy mess is that game addictive. I've never been sucked into a game like that before... EVER. Yesterday was a crappy day too. You know how some days it just feels like the world is out to get you because they freaking hate you? Yeah, that was me yesterday. Anyway, I headed home to get some Oblivion playtime in between classes and surprise surprise I get a message saying my profile was corrupted. Wazah? Excuse me?! I freaked and called Microsoft....twice. They told me that it was a completely random occurance but that nothing had happened to my system and that since it could be caused by any number of things they couldn't guarantee that it wouldn't happen again. This was followed by an "Oh yeah, sorry but your games have been corrupted by association. Sorry about that". 40 hours I'd put into Oblivion (in 3 weeks no less which is amazing for me since I work part time and go to school over full time). Needless to say I freaked. I opened my mouth and allowed words that would shame a sailor fall out. I couldn't say 3 words without something my mother would have cringed at falling out. I threw pillows (I'm not violent... just temporarily insane and still concerned about breaking things), I yelled curse words, I posted angry threads on a message board I went to. Then I decided to try and find out information on my own and lo and behold all was not lost! Thanks to the folks on the xbox.com forums I had a possible solution. I bought a memory card to back up the saves (just in case) and I tried that little work around. Amazingly it worked and my system is now whole again. Thank god for small favors and thank you Microsoft for training your employees on tech support on a tech support hotline. You guys are just grand... May 16 I Now Pronounce You Man and Gamer... the reasonsI'm not a huge blogger (although I think I might try my hand at it with some regularity from now on) but I've been reading some posts on the xbox.com forums and one post in particular really saddens me. A post entitled "Hey watch the Pms girls they cool" went from being a "what did you think" post to a personal attack on both PMS Tart and PMS Mary Jane. I have to admit, those two did things that got on my nerves in those interviews but as many people in that post said, they aren't professionals. As the bashing became more and more fierce and personal the comments about girl gamers started to come out and THAT is why I want to write in this blog. I got my first system at the age of 5 and I've been hooked ever since. As a female I get laughed at, I get treated as if I'm some oddity, and I get lots of comments towards the end of "You must be ugly because only ugly girls play games". I gotta say it gets tiring. It gets tiring to defend yourself solely because your hobby is populated by guys who don't really care to let girls in. I worked in a game store for over 4 years and my girl status came up more times than I care to mention. I would greet an incoming customer with "Hi welcome to ______. Can I help you with anything today?" only to get ignored as they walked to the guy next to me to ask him a question I could have answered. My husband and I actually met while working there but still the roles remain switched in some aspects. When he wants gaming news he generally asks me since I try and stay as up to date as possible. I read more about the industry itself as well as the previews for upcoming games than he does. I guess it boils down to the fact that I love the industry and the games it produces and he just loves the games themselves. So I ask you, why treat females differently? Why can't we work ourselves back to being just gamers? Next time you hear the voice of a female over your Live headset don't make a big deal out of it. Simply play and enjoy the game....just like she is. |
